Severo
Sanchez and the RiMac Rotary of Peru
I
met Severo and his friends on a VOSH-Florida mission to Yungay in
July of 2003, in the Andes of Peru, . Severo had traveled by bus
on a 10 hour trip to join us and help with the examinations. He
brought with him several of his recent graduates from his school,
Eurohispanol School of Optometry and Science. They paid their own
expenses and worked 10 hour days for the opportunity to bring eyecare
to this remote and very poor community. Read

The
Need For Optical Labs
About four years ago, those of us involved in the use of
recycled glasses noticed an increase in the difficulty of obtaining
enough quality recycled glasses, both single vision and flat top
bifocals. After discussion with local recyclers and optical labs
we determined the problem began with the increase in prescriptions
for progressive lenses. Read More....

VOSH-Florida
recently received its first interest check, in the amount of $41.64,
as an annual interest payment on the Certificate of Deposit which
VOSH-Florida holds in the Nicaraguan microbank SOSTENICA. The microbank
and its Nicaraguan investment arm, CEPRODEL, have extended 12,389
small loans among small shopowners, farmers and women going into
home businesses in Northern Nicaragua. These borrowers cannot get
commercial credit from large banks of Nicaragua. Microloans are
the only way these folks have to get a chance to enter the middle
class and leave a life of continued poverty. You can read about
the work and program of Sostenica on its website, located at http://www.sostenica.org/home.htm

Last
month VOSH/FL participated in the Global Market sale at the Winter
Park
Presbyterian Church, where we have a table with items for sale that
we
collectively pick up while on the various mission trips.
I am happy to report that this year we sold a total of $1137. worth
of
items, had a cost of $325. for items purchased, and netted $812.
for our
treasury.
Special thanks to John and Carla Gehrig for their efforts in keeping
this
project alive with countless manhours and their connection with
the church
where we have an excellent rapport with the powers-that-be. And
of course, special thanks to the specially selected and highly trained
sales team that
kept the inventory moving!!

RiMac
Rotary of Peru & Operation Vision, A Must Read!
Severo, Chairman of the project “Operation Vision” in
his Rotary Club, and his fellow instructors at the school along
with a group of third year students travel long distances to provide
eye care missions at the request of Rotary Clubs, Lion Clubs and
Church groups. Since 2003 we have worked with Severo and his students
on three missions. Most of the students can not afford a basic set
of scopes to do exams. Rotary and VOSH working together to bring
basic exam equipment to the students upon completion of their training.
This will make a hudge impact on the level of eye care in Peru.
